Research Partnerships

The Center for the Science of Moral Understanding is building partnerships with non-profits to bring research findings alive in the real world through the development and implementation of practical solutions for overcoming political intolerance and polarization.

ONE AMERICA MOVEMENT

The Center has partnered with The One America Movement to bridge divides in faith communities. The One America Movement is a national nonprofit confronting toxic polarization in our society. They equip faith communities to confront division and work together across political, racial, and religious divides to solve problems that matter.

ESSENTIAL PARTNERS

The Center has partnered with Essential Partners to develop new ways of measuring and encouraging curiosity. Essential Partners collaborates with civic groups, schools, faith communities, colleges, and organizations across the globe to build resilience, belonging, and trust across differences of values, beliefs, and identities.

NARRATIVE 4

The Center has partnered with Narrative 4 to harness our research revealing the power of sharing personal experiences. Narrative 4 is a global organization helping students understand that their voices, stories, actions, and lives matter, and that they have the power to change, rebuild and revolutionize systems.

scientists and practitioner partnerships

Scientists and practitioners have complementary experience, insights, and infrastructure that would benefit from collaboration. Practitioners offer scientists opportunities to showcase the generalizability of their work, and scientists offer practitioners an opportunity for “evidence-backed” credibility which is becoming increasingly valuable. Above all, science and practice can more efficiently solve societal problems, when open lines of communication exist. In response to this pressing need for collaboration, The Center for the Science of Moral Understanding is funding 3 scientist-practitioner partnerships that will serve as model examples of how to connect science with society. These partnerships will develop and evaluate a real-world intervention for creating moral understanding, with the end goal being both published articles and scalable interventions.

Allelo Inc

Using evidence-based dialogues to improve classroom discussions.

Allelo Inc. allows educators to easily create small group, text-based discussions, gives students specific guidance with regard to topic and format, and then monitors and generates feedback on a variety of metrics related to conversational health. Our scientist team will integrate the Allelo framework to develop a platform for training students in conversational receptiveness.

Essential partners

Bridging divides around policing with intellectual humility

Essential Partners (EP) will help participants in Sandwich, MA design and facilitate dialogues that bring in multiple perspectives and experiences around a controversial topic such as police-community relations, which leaders have identified as a priority issue facing their community. Our team of scientists will collaborate with EP to structure these dialogues in a way that might induce intellectual humility, openness, and a reduction in political animosity.

Playground of empathy

Using empathy to create a more tolerant future

The team at Playground of Empathy has developed an app called Empathable. This app introduces first-person vignettes from those with marginalized social identities, allowing participants to figuratively walk in that person’s shoes. Many non-profit entities have mission-driven programs that are meant to serve marginalized communities. These entities’ Board of Directors by majority are composed of white, wealthy, older executive members whose identities are far removed from their constituents’ experiences. These boards make critical decisions around program investment and mission fulfillment, yet they operate with a conceptual and statistics-based understanding of DEI principles. With “Empathable” experiences, board members can develop the tools and perspective that will better serve their mission and constituents. Our team of scientists will inform the design of the application as well as evaluate its success with sound methodological rigor.
